One of the biggest obstacles for creating a new label project (or any printing project) is the Preparation Cost. Prep charges are those costs that are required in order to create the best possible printed piece as per the customers requirements. The three components of these costs for any custom flexographic label (including Food Labels, Promotional Labels, Folded Coupon Labels, and Extended Text Labels are:
- Art & Proofing cost
- Plate Charges
- Tooling Charges
Unless the label changes in some way, these charges are one-time only charges.
Art & Proofing charges are the costs associated with evaluating supplied art, making minor adjustments and supplying a professional digital proof. Plate charges are literally the cost of the plate material, outputting the art files to the plate making department, making the plate and processing the plate for production. Tooling charges are incurred when the customer needs a die cut special shape or a very particular size label. Most label manufacturers maintain an inventory of existing die shapes and sizes, so this expense can be eliminated entirely if the customer is willing to consider an existing die size for their label.
Sometimes a label customer is surprised or is not prepared for these initial costs.
